Review: We Were Liars - E. Lockhart

At first, I was confused by this book. The writing really wasn't my kind of thing, with short sentences and paragraphs that didn't quite flow in terms of narrative. At first, I couldn't care less about the beautiful Sinclairs, and I didn't care about these spoilt kids who spend all their summer on a stunning Island with servants to do their cooking and cleaning for them. In all honestly, it got to bout the middle before I realised there was something a bit fishy about the whole thing, until I realised that perhaps there was more here than met the eye. It turns out there was.

This book sets off at a rather slow pace and carries on for quite a while in that way. The tone is confusing until our protagonist tells us about her head injury, and then it makes more sense. The tension never builds, but my interest did peak when I realised there was something pretty dark going on.

And then the truth comes out and hits you like a ton of bricks. You haven't been able to piece it together, it's completely unexpected. I loved that. I loved the way so many things began to make complete sense. I felt a huge loss at all the little things Cadence spoke about doing before, the normal things that were suddenly so far out of reach.

As characters go, Cady is really interesting and her whole group have a good depth to them. They weren't the perfect Sinclairs, they were the ones who value their friendship more than any possessions. Gat is a really great character and a nice love interest. I found all the characters to be quite normal, with their weak points and their strengths. Sometimes I was disgusted and other times I was surprised by some coherent thoughts that were put together by these teenagers.

It was a short book, but it felt longer to me. I was slightly bored by the mundane things, the inconsequential conversations and general glimpses of life. But I kept reading and I am glad I did, because the end, although slightly drawn out after that punch in the stomach, was really good.

Top Ten Tuesday #18 - Books I'm Not Sure I Want To Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a Meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish where I will be picking from their top tens and attempting to reveal what my thinking is behind these choices.

Books I'm Not Even Sure I Want To Read:

1. The Casual Vacancy - JK Rowling
The Harry Potter books were a huge part of my life for a long, long time. reading an adult book by the same author would be difficult, but something so grounded in reality and politics feels completely dull to me and I have no intention of going there. On the other hand, the Robert Galbraith books look like they might be worth a read.

2. Anything by Rainbow Rowell
I have heard a lot of good things about this author's books, but I really feel like I may not like what I read. The subject matter of some of them doesn't sound like my cup of tea. I have to say, the only one I am considering is Fangirl.

3. My Sisters Keeper - Jodi Picoult
If the film doesn't make me want to see it, the book isn't going to do anything for me. I honestly don't think I would like a thing about this book. It seems to be a book that people either love or hate, and I reckon I would probably be in the hate category on this.

4. Dorothy Must Die - Danielle Paige
Mixed reviews. Very mixed. Not the best background to the book either. Still, the premise is really interesting and I'm a sucker for retellings. Most of the reviews point out that we don't actually see Dorothy for ages though, so maybe I'll pass on this one.

5. Ten Tiny Breaths - K.A Tucker
So many people like it! What if I dont? It seems to be something rather gritty and rather real, and for me too much realism makes me stop reading. Sometimes I just want to get away from the world, not be sucked into the depths of someone else's misery, whose life may be two steps away from being mine.

6. We Were Liars - E. Lockhart
Jesus, this book is so over-hyped, I'm sick of looking at the ridiculously cryptic synopsis. Still, it was 99p on kindle and I bought it nonetheless. I am still umming and ahhing over reading it though. Let's see if it's as good as people say it is.

7. Requiem - Lauren Oliver
I read the first two books, Delirium and Pandemonium, ages ago and I heard the end is a bummer.

8. Snap with the last Divergent book, so I'm not entirely sure on reading that either.

9. Reached - Ally Condie
I read Matched and Crossed so long ago that I can hardly remember the plot, only that Crossed wasn't as good.

10. Lux Series - Jennifer L. Armentrout
I am getting tons of hype... too much hype, about this series. People seem to love it but I am almost sick of seeing the covers.

Do you agree? If you don't, let me know why you think I should read the book. I'd love to hear your opinion.

The Reading Pile #7

This month has been crazy, with a brand new job to contend with my rather large reading habit. I've also been trying to balance my social life out once more, and admittedly not having much luck at all with that. Never mind. Anyway, so this month I bought too many books and said yes to too many books. I have a huge reading pile so I have stopped accepting review requests for the moment so that I can actually read something I've bought myself. The Gospel of Loki from my birthday in May is still sitting, untouched on my bookshelf. It. Will. Get. Read... Eventually.

Anyway, here's my hoarde this month. Not a huge one, thank God, but big enough:

Bought:
The Luxe/ Rumours - Anna Godbersen
I'm a sucker for covers with pretty dresses, so when I saw these two in a charity shop for £2 each, I had to snap them up. These books deal with high American society in 1899 and is full of scandal, intrigue and beautiful people. Its historical fiction in quite an unusual setting for me and I cant wait to read it!

The Immortal Circus: Final Act - A.R. Kahler
I saw this in a Kindle Daily Deal, and since I loved the first two books in the series I had to buy it. The Immortal Circus is a modern day fairytale set around a travelling circus owned by the dark fairy queen, Mab.

The Grimm Legacy - Polly Shulman
Anoher Daily Deal, and something I've been eyeing up for a little while. Although this may seem like another fairytale retelling, it is actually all about the artifacts in those fairytales and about how someone is stealing them. It sounds good to me!

We Were Liars - E. Lockhart
This ebook was a steal online at 99p, and since every blogger on earth seems to love it, I thought I would give it a go. I was a little bit skeptical about this book, because everyone seems to like it so much and I tend to get dissappointed in books with so much hype. Lets hope not!

Borrowed:
The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
This book has been reccommended to me twice now, and since the author is a friend of a friend, I am fully invested in this. I actually gave in and saw the TV adaptation, because Sophie Turner (Sansa in Game of Thrones) is in it, and I loved the story, so I'd love to see how well it has been handled.

Before I Go To Sleep - S.J. Watson
The film of this is coming out soon, and seeing the trailer actually prompted me to pick this up. I have had it on the shelf for a while but never really fancied it. Now I am totally intrigued as to what happens.

Requested:
Dead Girl Walking - Ruth Silver
A princess who gets murdered has the chance to become a grim reaper, what's not to love? I am very much looking forward to reading this.

Won:
Frostbitten - Heather West
Competitions are the best, and I was pleasantly surprised when I won an ebook of this. It's a paranromal YA read with a nice sprnkling of romance, and it sounds pretty awesome to me!

Review requests:
REHO
Aliens, nuclear war and finding the truth about the world's origins, intriguing stuff.

Prompossible
The companion book to Prom Impossible, this time told from the boys point of view. Should be interesting!

Demon Stones
A world where demons have been released to roam the land? Sounds awesome.

Majra
The blurb to this book is kind of confusing, and I sense that there is a lot going on in this fantasy.

Twisted Reflections
The sequel to Dangerous Reflections, a teen time travel that I adored reading. Eeek! So excited.

Thank you's this month go to:
My sister and my boyfriend's mum for allowing me to borrow their books!
YABound Tours
D.L. Denham
Laura Pauling
Michael Drakich
J. Simon
Booktrope - Pamela Labbe and Shay West
