Based on The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe, this book follows the story of Madeleine Usher, who is cursed to die young and forever live in the haunted Usher home, which seems to have a life of its own. A psychological thriller which sounds incredibly creepy.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth - Carrie Ryan

Yay! Zombies! our main character is trapped inside a rigid world of rules, but one by one these rules fail her. People keep dying, and eventually she has to choose between her home and the one she loves. Is there a life for them outside the safe fences of the village?

The Knife of Never Letting Go - Patrick Ness

Being able to hear other people's thoughts mixed in with a horrible secret and a thrilling chase where it is highly likely the bad guy knows what you're thinking. Wow, how will the protagonist get out of that? Or maybe they won't?

Wednesday Wishlist #26 - Fantasy and Retellings

This week it's fantasy and retellings. Yay!

The Queen of the Tearling - Erika Johansen
A nineteen year old girl must claim her right to the throne and become the fearless leader her brutal country expects. She battles against all those that would do her harm, but can she survive long enough? Magic, mystery and romance.. sounds pretty interesting!

Ella Enchanted - Gail Carson Levine
I watched this film as a kid and I loved it! It's a fairytale about a girl who is given the 'gift' of obedience. She goes on a quest to get rid of it by finding the fairy responsible and ends up falling in love with a prince along the way. A Cinderella story, but not as you know it.

Cruel Beauty - Rosamund Hodge
Beauty and the Beast gets a makeover in this fantasy retelling. A girl has been betrothed to the powerful, immortal man who has issued a curse over her people, and she is trained to be the one who kills him. But he is not as expected, and soon she finds herself beguiled by his charms and his magic. A love story at heart, but with a nice bit of fantasy mixed in to make thing interesting. I must read this.

It's good old fiction this week. Here are my picks:


The Miniaturist - Jessie Burton

Nella arrives in Amsterdam to become the wife of a reclusive merchant, who gives her a cabinet sized replica of their home as a wedding gift. To furnish it, she enlists the help of a miniaturist, whose creations appear to mimic reality in strange ways. This helps Nella to understand the people she lives with, but then she realises that everyone there is in grave danger. I've been pining for this for forever because it sounds so awesome.



The Half Life of Molly Pierce - Katrina Leno

Molly Pierce feels like she is missing parts of her life, and now she is remembering her past and the secrets that come with it. There appears to be a bit of romance in here too. I am really interested into what Molly has forgotten and more essentially, why.


Rebel Belle - Rachel Hawkins

Harper Price is given strange abilities after a run-in at the homecoming dance. She becomes an agile and strong fighter with lethal instincts, because she is now a Paladin, a guardian who is charged to protect others. The issues is, she hates the guy she has been given to protect.. at least, she thought she did. I love Rachel Hawkins and this sounds like a lot of fun!

Yay, Fantasy! These ones seem a little bit fairytale to me too.

Coral and Bone - Tiffany Daune

Is this a mermaid story? I just don't know. But what I do know is that our protagonist is discovering some cool new powers along with a mysterious underwater world called Elosia. She learns that her life has been a lie and discovers some truths about her past along the way. When those who deceived her come for help, she has to choose whether to walk away or use her new powers.

Inland - Kat Rosenfeld

Possibly another mermaid tale.. maybe. This time the protagonist has a debilitating illness where her lungs are failing. her mother drowned when she was young and her father moved them inland, but when fate moves them back near the sea, Callie is inexplicably drawn to the ocean. She soon discovers a family destiny that 'holds generations of secrets and very few happy endings.' This one sounds rather more psychological in nature than the first.


Between - Megan Whitmer

A YA novel about a girl whose family get separated by something supernatural, and she is whisked off into another world to be kept safe while others look for them. Charlie learns that this world is full of myths and legends, and that a group known as The Fellowship is protecting them from human discovery. The bad news is that she was one of those who were being protected, but she never knew it. Danger soon follows as the magic begins to fail and creatures begin to die, and all of it is linked to Charlie.

This week I've gone all fantasy on you:

Red Queen - Victoria Aveyard

The first book in a YA fantasy trilogy, where a world is divided by blood. The Silvers are the ruling class, and they are elite warriors with god-like powers. The Reds are commoners, poverty-stricken and powerless. That is, until Mare Barrow discovers that despite her red blood, she also has a talent, and that could destroy Silver control. Doesn't that just sound awesome?

Illusions of Fate - Kiersten White

A historical fantasy YA where an outcast girl is introduced to the Albion court, where she is enchanted by the power, money status and magic that suddenly surrounds her. A gorgeous young lord rounds off the romance, and also introduces some much-needed danger as his skeletons are slowly prised from the cupboard by an evil Lord. Oh, I love a bit of magic mixed with period drama!

Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo

Everyone seems to have read this but me! It's an epic fantasy with a war-ravaged world and one girl who discovers a new ability and is thrust into a life training to be a Grisha, one of the magical elite of that world.

This week my wishlist had gone all historical:

The Cure for Dreaming - Cat Winters

A suffragist in America is hypnotised and is given the gift of being able to see people's true natures. She is drawn into a mysterious and strange relationship with the man who hypnotised her and sets to work making her voice heard. I haven't read any books about suffragists before, and this one sounds really cool with the hint of magic in there. I'd also like to see the movement in America compared to how I know it in the UK.

Gilt , Tarnish and Brazen - Katherine Longshore

Not quite a series, but all set in the time of Henry VIII and from the perspective of his wives or other ladies of the court. Intrigue, plotting, romance, betrayal and friendship run as themes throughout the books. Sounds awesome to me.

The Palace of Curiosities - Rosie Garland

Two strange outcasts find refuge in a strange place called The Palace of Curiosities, where they become The Lion-Faced Girl and The Flayed Man. A Victorian-era piece of fantastical fiction that sounds really intriguing.

Oh yes, another fairytale edition.

Heartless - Marissa Meyer

Another Alice in Wonderland retelling, this time a prequel set in the world of Wonderland, telling of how a marquis' teenage daughter becomes the Queen of Hearts.

Atlantia - Ally Condie

A story that appears to be based on The Little Mermaid, only apparently much more grand in scale and a bit more to do with Siren legend as well. I love Ally Condie's writing, so I am really hoping that this is as riveting as her previous books.

Winterspell - Claire Legrand

A mayor's daughter leading a double life, an abduction, a cursed Prince, a faerie Queen and a strange new land. All of this somehow rolls into being an adaptation of The Nutcracker. It sounds really interesting. is it just me, or does the girl on the cover really look like Kristen Stewart?

Shards of a Glass Slipper - Roy A. Mauntsen

Multiple fairytale princesses, a tyrannical version of Cinderella, a war with Wonderland, some murdered fairy Godmothers and a young girl named Patience Muffet who holds the shards of Cinderella's glass slippers. Sounds like a recipe for some awesomeness. This appears to be a fantasy epic and part of a series which I am bound to love.

The Madman's Daughter - Megan Shepherd


I have never read The Island of Doctor Moreau, but don't worry, I will by the time I pick up this book and its' sequels. This book is set a little later than the original, and follows Juliet Moreau as she discovers that her father is still alive and experiementing on animals. She travels to the island to talk some sense into him, but to no avail. It sounds awesome, creepy and perfect for me.

Of Metal and Wishes - Sarah Fine
I am so excited by this. Take some Phantom of the Opera, then move it from France to Asia and set it in a slaughterhouse instead of an operahouse. Add some intrigue with a group of outsiders and a few murders and you have a really awesome contemporary (perhaps even timeless) piece of fiction. I need to read this.

Painted Blind - Michelle A. Hansen
This is a modernised retelling of Cupid and Psyche, but it follows the same principle. Psyche tried to glimpse Cupid's face and so his mother, Aphrodite, forces her to test her love by giving her challenges. it sounds like a properly romantic and submersive read.

This loose YA retelling focuses on a girl who has been in and out of mental institutes because her parents died and she believes in a magical island. The thing is, when she goes to a new school, the boy who sits next to her looks rather too much like the boy from the island. Things start getting confusing when his temperamental friend Belle enters the situation.

Liars. Inc - Paula Stokes
From much-love The Art of Lainey author comes a really awesome idea. A schoolboy begins a business selling lies to other students, namely forging permission slips and stuff like that. The one little lie gets out of control, and a boy is murdered with our main character as the main suspect. Well, it's one way to teach kids not to lie.

The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
A recommendation twice over, this books is a creepy story about a house and set of twins surrounded in mystery; the thirteenth tale of famous author Vida Winter, and one that she has waited to tell for many year. Honestly, I got handed this book and a the next day the TV adaptation was on TV. I had to watch it, it had cool actresses in it!

Imagine falling in love with the actual devil? No, me neither, but someone has! This looks set to be a great series and is totally up my street.

A super creepy town where all the  teenager go stark raving mad every four years. It sounds plain horrible, but also a bit too interesting to miss out on.

The Archived - Victoria Schwab

The archive is a place where the dead are stored, and our protagonist is the keeper of those dead, tasked with keeping from waking up and from getting out. But someone is deliberately altering these archives. Time is limited and our main character must figure out who it is before the archive its-self crumbles. Sounds awesome and like something you can easily get caught up in.

In the future, there is no need for food, people take medication to keep themselves going, until one day they start to feel hungry. What would happen in a world where there is no longer any food to keep the people alive? One girl sets out to find real food with a boy from a resistance set on bringing food back. This one sounds very interesting, and I wonder how this world works.

A girl wakes up in a hospital 1000 years into the future to find the world ravaged. A plague has wiped out most of the population and it turns out she can trust no-one. The reason she has been revived is so that she can give them something, but what that is.. I'll have to find out. I am so intrigued to know why and how these people woke up this particular girl, and why everything seems to familiar to her.

This weeks wishlist is going for the sci-fi theme:

These Broken Stars - Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
I've heard such good things about this book and I think I will love it. It's got a love story in space! What's not to like? In my mind it's almost a Titanic kind of story, only Jack gets stranded along with Rose in a galaxy far, far away. Also, the cover is breathtaking.

Across The Universe Series - Beth Revis
A creepy thriller-like read, again set in space, this time on a spaceship that wakes its inhabitants up fifty years too soon and there's a would-be killer on board. Oh, and of course there's a love story. Life just wouldn't be the same without a bit of romance. The cover to this is also beautiful.

Virtual Immortality, Division Zero: Lex De Mortuis - Matthew S. Cox

After reading Division Zero for the first time, I loved the idea of a policewoman who could fight malevolent spirits in a high-tech future, and so I really want to know what happens next with her. I also wanted to find out more about the world and wondered if I might be able to understand it better if I read Matthew S.Cox's other book based in the same place, Virtual Immortality. Lets hope I get engrossed just as much as I was in the first one!

A Beauty so Beastly - Rashelle Workman
A Beauty and the Beast retelling with some really cool twists; the beauty is the beast, and she is cursed to have no feelings towards others, a man comes to her and is subject to a lot of bad things going on, because she wants to break him. It sounds really interesting and I am pretty intrigued as to what my favourite fairy-tale can become.

Sequel to the amazing Reckless, in which a boy travels through the Mirrorworld to rescue his brother from a terrible curse. This time Jacob Reckless is dying and he is on a quest to find a legendary item that just might save him. I really need to re-read the first book before I venture into this one.

The Girl Who Never Was - Skylar Dorset
A fairy princess reveals her birthday to a stranger and causes devastation. There appears to be an awful lot packed into this one; Fairy courts, insane fathers, murderous mothers, wizards, prophecies, romance, adventure and a ton of quests. Phew.

The Caged Graves - Dianne K Salerni

This book sounds awesome. Inspired by a real set of caged graves, this story focuses on a 17-year-old girl who comes back to her home town to find the graves of her mother and her aunt mysteriously caged. No-one will tell her why, but soon she hears rumours of buried treasure and witchcraft. Romance and mystery? Hell yes.

A woman finds a letter from her husband that was supposed to be read after he had died, but he is still very much alive, and he has got one whopping great-big secret. I've been itching to know what it is ever since I first read the blurb.

Marina - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Zafon's books are like air to me. I absolutely must read them or I may die. This particular one is a children's book. Kids vanishing, creepy gravestones, rituals and secrets all set in Barcelona. Sounds enticing.

Animal Farm - George Orwell
Classic fiction meant to satire communism, set in a farm where the pigs turn into dictators. What's not to like? I am extremely fascinated to see what this book is like. I've ready read 1984 and Brave New World, so I am slowly getting through this lot!

This week's wishlist is focusing on parallel lives and worlds.. and twins. My own book is set mostly in a parallel universe, so these books are almost research for it. Linked is simply because I am a twin and I get interested in how people write us.

Pivot Point/ Split Second - Kasie West
A girl with the power to see the outcomes of choices she makes. She has to choose between two lives, knowing what the outcome of this choice will be. Things get even more tangled up when her father is asked to consult on a murder. A novel all about the making the right choices, possibly in a similar vein to Between the Lives (reviewed here).

Parallel - Lauren Miller
Another book about suddenly landing in a parallel life, this time the MC has already made a choice that she didn't mean to make, landing her miles away from where she really wanted to be. One day she wakes up in a different life; the life she wanted, while her parallel self continues in her old life. Oh, and did I mention that every time her parallel self makes a choice, this MC's world changes too? Sounds awesome.

The Dark World - Cara Lynn Shultz
Dead best friends, demons, warlocks, war and a dark world overrun with demons. It sounds good, and this Dark World sounds nice and creepy, hopefully on the same scale as the hellish one in Constantine.

Linked/ Unravel - Imogen Howson
Twins who can feel each-other's pain and see through each-other's eyes. Not only that, but there's a Government conspiracy and one of these twins knows something that could tear the world apart. It sounds like a super-sci-fi from all the rave reviews, so hopefully the twin thing won't bug me too much! Sounds fascinating.

The City's Son/ The Glass Republic/ Our Lady of the Streets - Tom Pollock
Book one and two of the Skyscraper Throne. Secret worlds based on London, magic, monsters and stopping and all-out war. Sounds brilliant, and in the same epic vein as Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman. Also, the covers are so cool!

Traitor Queen - Trudi Canavan
The final book in the Traitor Spy Trilogy. I am dying to find out what happens to Lorkin and the rogue Magician and.. well, everything! I may have to reread the first two book though; it's been such a long time!

Broken Homes, Foxglove Summer, The Hanging Tree - Ben Aaronovitch
The fourth and fifth books in the Peter Grant Series. All to do with wizards in the modern metropolitan policeforce. The amount of awesomeness contained in these pages is without measure. I know, I am slacking. Broken Homes has been out since forever and Foxglove summer is coming out soon! I can't wait to read more about my favourite policeman-wizard and his strange, dark and extremely magical cases.

This week's wishlist is very much to do with death. I don't have a weird obsession with it, but for some reason strange deathly powers and zombies are a really cool thing to read about for me:

The Body Finder - Kimberley Derting
A girl who has the power to sense dead bodies and find the creature that killed them. A serial killer ravaging the town she lives in. She may be the only one who can find them. Ohhh, this sounds good!

Shatter Me/ Unravel Me/ Ignite Me - Tahereh Mafi
Dystopian world? Check. Strange power? Check. Love? Check. Action? Check. Sounds good to me! But it's not just all that, it's the power I love the idea of; the idea of being able to kill someone with just one touch puts me in mind of Rogue from X-Men, but hopefully that's where the resemblance to that franchise stops. We shall have to wait and see!

My Soul to Take (Soul Screamers Series) - Rachel Vincent
A girl who knows when people are about to die, who can't help but scream when they do. Banshees are an amazing idea to write about, and there aren't many books out there that deal with this creepy paranormal creature. I love the premise, so I really hope this series is good! There are tons of these books, so it should keep me busy for a while.

Revived - Cat Patrick
A story about a girl who has died and been revived several times by means of a Government Drug Testing Programme. I'd love to see how the author handles the idea of death and rebirth in this one. Sounds like a good almost-dystopia with a real focus on identity and death.
